Creating this mosaic was revealing to me about my own creative process. This mosaic was the product of an exploration of a fairly new technique and material. I used tinted thinset with glass smalti, marble, beads, and slate embedded into a bed of thinset. The name is from a Greek myth, and the statue of that Greek god that reminds me of the image in this mosaic. I also named this piece with a Greek name in honor of the more classical style that I used in laying down the tesserae. Framed in a black wood floater frame. Wired and ready to hang on the wall. I will post a photo of it framed soon. 12.25” x 12.25”.

I created this after finding a large awkward triangular piece of cement board hiding in my studio. Brain Dance reflects my interest in the human brain. I am intrigued by the idea of life's stages. This piece depicts a lucky life, beginning with the new green growth, which matures and browns, and eventually transitions into a period of uncertainty, strife, at times chaos, with occasional sparks of success. As life continues, obstacles are overcome and satisfaction, happiness, and success are achieved. That period is followed by transitioning to a period of calm and serenity, which is followed, inevitably, by death, represented by a black segment dulled by silver iridescence. This life is surrounded by the greater universe, which we all return to in microscopic form.
I used many materials in this piece, including art glass, iridescent glass, rusty nails, clay spheres, stone, smalti, lava rock, metallic microspheres, glass beads, scrap rubber, slate, gold leaf smalti, stone, and tinted mortar. 18” x 18” framed

This mosaic was created using slate and some stones given to me by my son-in-law, along with slate, and glass smalti . The adhesive is tinted thinset, which it is super messy to work with, and I had to work quickly, which is not my usual style! The jagged black line across the heart suggests many aspects of love. Perhaps the ups-and-downs of a real relationship; perhaps that love isn't always smooth sailing; perhaps that when we fall in love, we seem to fit together so perfectly; perhaps a broken heart; perhaps that love isn't all pink and flowery, but has some jagged edges? 10" x 9"

This mosaic was created using a piece of palm bark, found on a morning walk. I created the substrate by covering the palm bark with wire mesh, plaster bandages, and mortar, and then I proceeded to mosaic it with art glass, iridescent glass, fused glass, glass rods, china, and buttons. It was a challenge to find a way to hang it on the wall without any wire showing, but I was able to do it. It is a beautiful lush piece, with a lot of movement. 18" by 20"

I had a lot of fun making this abstract mosaic, and enjoyed the movement that was created, as well as the various colored circles. This mosaic was made using a hand-made substrate in the shape of a Calotropis bloom, with tesserae of stained glass, iridescent glass, and tile. The mosaic was then mounted on a board that was coated with two layers of thin set mortar then carved with lines so that the green lines from the tinted first layer show through. Green, magenta, pink, violet.
I was not satisfied with the look, so I covered it with some gorgeous green glass, and grouted with dark green grout. I am very happy with it now. This mosaic was inspired by my time at the 2012 Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada with my sweetheart, Jon. There is fire in the background, we are wearing "blinkie" necklaces (essential in the darkness of the playa to avoid being run over by an art car), and lasers are shooting into the night sky. The mosaic was based on a selfie that Jon took of both of us during the burning of the "Man."
Burner Love is a celebration of romantic love. While the fire depicted behind the lovers represents the bonfire at the Burning Man festival, it also reflects the passion of the moment.
The mosaic is in the shape of a pentagon, which represents the perimeter fence of the festival. It was made on a cement board substrate, using mirror, stained, and iridescent glass, and beads. When Jon and I married, we used this image on our wedding invitations. 27” x 28”
This was a commissioned piece. I was asked to create a mosaic based on a needlepoint leather purse from the 1970s. I tried to find out who created the original image, but to no avail. In addition to being inspired by the original image, I was also inspired by the image of "The Wave" by Japanese artist, Katsushkia Hokusai.
This was done on a 22" diameter cement board substrate. Individual tesserae of stained, iridescent, and dicroic glass were hand-cut and then glued to the substrate. Once all tesserae were in place, the piece was grouted using three different grout colors.
A shot of Wave Woman from the side, in order to show the lovely reflections on the iridescent glass used for the wave foam.

I found a wooden mask at the Animal Rescue Foundation thrift store, where I volunteer. I immediately saw it as a potential mosaic. I imagined a headdress depicting royalty and high status. As I began working on the mosaic, I became unsure as to whether it represented a man or a woman. At one point, I felt strongly that I was creating the face of a woman, but in the end, he emerged as a male.
His eyes were one of the first components that I laid down, and I decided to shift the focus of his eyes to the left, feeling that it made him more alive. I liked the eyes, but was unsure what they were looking at. As I finished the piece, the true story emerged – he had recently had a red jewel embedded into his left forehead, and as he entered a social gathering, he noticed that some men off to his left had seen the jewel and were talking to each other, behind their hands, about the jewel and about him. It is unclear what he is feeling, but I sense some insecurity and/or uncertainty in his face. It is noteworthy that he is concerned with the jewel, while paying little attention to his very ornate headdress, which is a signal of his status and conventionally expected of a man of position.
I enjoyed using a variety of materials for this mosaic, including recycled china; beads of glass, stone and metal; glass of various kinds (stained, iridescent, dichroic, and mirror); glass cabochons; and tile. 21” x 7” x 4”

The jagged black line across the heart suggests many aspects of love. Perhaps the ups-and-downs of a real relationship;; perhaps that love isn't always smooth sailing; perhaps that when we fall in love, we seem to fit together so perfectly; perhaps a broken heart; perhaps that love isn't all pink and flowery, but has some jagged edges? 10" x 9"

Mosaics can be created using three-dimensional objects, with nice results. Three-dimensional substrates may also be created specifically with mosaic in mind. Applying tesserae to three-dimensional objects can be tricky in order to accommodate bends, curves, and corners, but it is nice to see the light playing off of the various angles.
This piece is a sculpted form created using fiberglass mesh and mortar, then covered with very small pieces of stained glass which was laid on its side to increase reflectivity. Approximately 9.5” x 14.5”. It can be displayed using a stand (as shown or hung on the wall.

This is sculptural mosaic in the shape of a Mobius strip. It was handmade out of wire mesh, plaster bandages, and tinted thinset, and then mosaiced with handcut art glass and tinted grout. It is approximately 17” x 10” x 5”. The colors of glass range from reds to oranges to yellow, with turquoise accents.
A Möbius strip is a curiosity, because when you trace your finger all around the surface of the strip without lifting your finger, it ends up where you began. So, it seems as if it has only one side, but it certainly appears to have two! It was a discovered independently by two German mathematicians in 1858: Johann Listing and August Mobius.
I enjoyed being able to combine both math and art in the creation of this mosaic.

This mosaic has a slight three-dimensional element to it, which makes for more reflectivity. I used dichroic glass, stained glass, mirror glass, ball chain, jewelry chain, buttons, and cabochons, on a handmade cement subsrate, and grouted with black grout.

This heart mosaic was created on wediboard, then built up with a quick setting cement to give it a 3D element. Tesserae included stained glass, glass cabochons, iridescent glass, recycled china, beads, and rhinestones. It was finished with a black grout. It is made to hung on the wall.

The piece is grouted with black grout. 21” x 7” x 4”

"Surrender," is a sculptural mosaic of a primitive boat, created out of wire mesh, plaster bandages, and thinset mortar. I mosaiced the the entire boat with mirror glass, art glass, gold smalti, and glass frit. I also used glass, metal, and ceramic beads, and teensy glass spheres. 17” long, 7” tall, 6” wide
To grace a garden, I created this 10" gazing ball. The substrate is styrofoam covered with mesh and quick setting concrete. The tesserae include small and large glass cabochons, stained, iridescent, and mirror glass,, as well as some broken dishes. Once all the pieces were glued in place, it was grouted using black grout.

This mosaic was created by starting with a flat surface with a shape cut out of wediboard, and then building it up into a slightly three-dimensional shape using a quick setting concrete that was then sculpted into a three-dimensional pumpkin. It was nice to have more planes to attach glass to, giving the piece added interest, and more variety of color and reflectivity.

This was made with a glass egg which was originally painted. I sanded the paint off to reveal clear glass, and then painted the surface with transparent glass paints in different colors — yellow, green, pink, purple, blue. I then glued shattered tempered glass onto the egg, and grouted with black grout. It was place on a lighted base, which illuminated all of the colors.
3D wall-hanging made from hand-formed substrate. Materials include clear glass, stained glass, iridescent glass, tempered glass, tiny glass spheres, and alcohol inks. Some of the glass was nipped along one edge, and adhered along the other edge. It was grouted using multiple grout colors.
Was on exhibit at the Contemporary Mosaic Art Summit Juried Exhibition in Ashland, Oregon at the University of Southern Oregon in September and October 2016.
Was on exhibit at the Left Coast Juried Exhibition at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, California in April and May 2017. 26" x 21"

These are mosaics that I made for my grandchildren to hang on their bedroom walls. The first was for Maya, then Sebastian in the style of Superman lettering (quite a challenge), then Gabrielle who likes stars, and then Kane, who was born on Valentine's Day, and lastly, Chloe, my third granddaughter, Also included are address plaques to be hung outside a house for address identification.
This was made out of something found on my daily walk. It was an ugly wallpapered “M,” with some kind of metal decoration fastened to the front. My husband removed the metal for me, and I peeled off the wallpaper, and then set to resurfacing it for my teen granddaughter. It was a fun project and my granddaughter loved it.

This was my fourth name plate, for my fourth grandchild, Kane. He was born on Valentine's Day, hence the heart. The idea for his little feet I got from my friend, fellow mosaic artist, and mentor, Gina Dominguez.

This nameplate was created for my third grandchild, little Gabrielle, for her third birthday. I tried to incorporate her favorite colors (pink and purple), and her love for stars, and I just had to throw in Saturn for good measure.

A name plaque for my new granddaughter, Chloe. Her mama asked for something in green and purple/violet, so this is what I came up with. It changes dramatically with the light, since her name is done with iridescent glass.

This was definitely my most challenging nameplate to date. I wanted the letters to reflect a "Superman" theme. It worked out pretty well. The background glass is an iridescent blue. This was for my third grandchild, Sebastian.

This was the first nameplate I created, and it was completed when I was fairly new to mosaics. It was done using pink glass, hand-cut, and blue glass cabochons, cut in half. It certainly makes it much easier when the name is short!

These mosaics pieces were created for a client, with their specific needs and desires in mind. I enjoy creating art that satisfies others as well as myself.
This is a large mosaic I created during early Covid lockdown for my son and his family of five. It was installed outdoors at one end of their swimming pool. Each turtle represents a member of the family. I used thinset mortar to adhere the hand-cut stained & iridescent glass to construction board. The round and slightly raised bubbles and the turtles’ eyes were created in a kiln by fusing clear and iridescent glass together. The mosaic was finished with charcoal-colored grout. It is 3 feet by 5 feet.
Stained glass and mirror glass in oranges and yellows, creating a geometric design that seems to pull one into the center, where you find beautiful dichroic glass. This was a commissioned piece.
This was a commissioned piece which was created for a client who loved my “Vortex” mosaic, which is not for sale. I was able to recreate this piece using similar glass, although not identical. It is actually a bit warmer, and is framed with a red glass rather than black, per the client’s request.. The client was very pleased with the result, which was my goal! I was also quite happy with the result. 21” diameter, stained and dichroic glass on wediboard.
These 4” coasters were made using black tiles, art glass, mirror glass, iridescent glass, and charcoal grout. This was a commissioned project.
An 8” x 8” glass mosaic, created from handout art glass and iridescent glass, as well as scattered clear, silver-lined glass beads. Grouted with charcoal grout. Commission.
A piece commissioned by my daughter, who wanted a forest, boulders, and California wildflowers, in an uplifting, happy scene. This will be installed behind her range top, so will be getting lots of attention. It is 22" x 28", on wediboard, with five different grout colors. Stained and iridescent glass.
Installed.
Individual tesserae of stained, iridescent, and dichotic glass were hand-cut and then glued to the substrate. Once all tesserae were in place, the piece was grouted using three different grout colors. Commission
Another shot of Wave Woman from the site, in order to pick up some of the lovely light on the iridescent foam of the wave.
This mosaic was created as part of San Francisco General Hospital Foundation's 2018 Fundraising campaign. My heart design was one of six designs selected to create the 17" hearts, which will be auctioned in February 2018. Prior to that, the hearts will be on display at Macy's in San Francisco.
The heart substrate was provided by the Foundation.. I covered the entire heart with glass -- stained, iridescent, dichroic, and mirror glass. I chose to create sunsets because the sunset over the Pacific Ocean from Mt. Tamalpais is so very representative of the San Francisco Bay area to me, and is close to my heart. I hope my creation brings in a good amount of funding for the foundation. I am very pleased and honored to support the hospital in this way.

This mosaic was created on commission. I was asked to create a beach scene that had both a peaceful, calm feel, as well as some movement. The design was developed by sharing and revising concept and color ideas via emails and drawings with my client. The final result pleased both of us.
Stained glass, iridescent glass, mirror glass, and glass frit. The foam on the wave was created by multiple layering of clear, coarse glass frit. 24" x 18"
This is a piece that was commissioned by my sister. Actually, it turned out to be two pieces (see next image). It was a great learning experience for me in cutting large pieces of glass and in learning about adhesives. I learned a lot. In fact, this is actually one of three mosaics, the first of which I retrieved because I was so dissatisfied with it. However, this one and the next I am happy with. They are hanging in her dining room, in front of a sliding glass door. The are glass on clear glass, so the light definitely shines through these pieces. They are about 28" x 14".

This table was made at the request of a friend who loves orange and green. She had purchased this table, but the top was broken, so she asked me to mosaic it. She gave me free reign, but I attempted to fit the design to her personality and taste. It is made using stained glass, mirror glass, and dichroic glass, all hand cut and glued to the substrates prior to grouting. The table is approximately 12" in diameter. It is reminds me of the 60's and feels very happy.

This is a piece that was commissioned by a friend, to go into a cupboard in her studio. Her studio was quite unique, and I tried to keep in mind her sense of color and design. This photo shows the mosaic after it was installed in the cupboard door, and after she had painted the cupboard a turquoise kind of color.

Approximately 20” x 8.5”. Made using stained glass and tile cabochons. Installed on stucco exterior.
This mosaic was a commissioned piece created from a treasured glass bowl that had belonged to my client's mother, which had accidentally fallen and broken. The bowl had only two colors -- lavender and deep royal blue. It was quite a challenge to deal with the differing thicknesses of the glass, keeping in mind the client's preferences and feelings. I was thrilled when I presented this to her, as she was so completely happy with what I had created for her. It is 13" x 13" in the frame.
Photos of work in progress, of my studio, or of me either working or with one of my mosaics.

This is a 3’ x 5’ mosaic that will be hung outside behind a swimming pool. I started it early this year (2020), and it’s been keeping me busy throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Here I am working on it with the help of one of my favorite birds, a crow. She has a friendly demeanor, and is, unlike a live crow, apparently not wary of me. My husband, Jon, gave this to me, knowing my affection for crows. He also took this photo.
This is the piece of palm bark that I found on a morning walk, brought it home, and covered it with wire mesh, plaster bandages, and thinset mortar. to make a good substrate to receive glass and other materials.
This is how Fiddlehead looked after I had the substrate prepared and ready to receive its lovely glass, china, buttons, or whatever else I might use.
This is the heart, without any work yet done by me, as I received it from the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation ready for me to cover it with glass. As you can see, without anything at all, it has a beautiful form. I was one of the artists selected to create unique hearts for the Foundation for their annual fundraiser. I feel honored to have been chosen to contribute in this way. You can see my completed heart (two sides) on my other pages of this website or on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/janerussellmosaics/.
I'm working on another version of my vortex mosaic, but this time in honor of the color blue. So far, I'm feeling the ocean and outer-space. I'm using a combination of opaque and transparent glass in various shades of blue, along with a wavy silver mirror glass, and some dichroic glass. Substrate is wediboard cut into a circle with a 21" diameter.
Photo taken in my studio while this commissioned piece was in progress. I love the lighting here, and the way it reminds me of a jigsaw puzzle.
At my friend and mentor's studio, Gina Dominguez, where I have enjoyed the cameraderie with Gina and other mosaic artists a couple of times a month. A fun and valuable time.
When finished, this will be approximately 28" x 22", and will be installed behind a range top. It is all stained glass, and will be adhered to fiberglass mesh, and then adhered to her wall using thinset mortar.
My daughter wanted a depiction of wildflowers, forest, and large boulders, and this is the design we came up with. I finally started working on this after a few months of design work, and waiting for the right time. So far, I'm quite happy with it.
Tree, Boulders, Flowers are all affixed, as well as some clouds. Next is the sky. Coming along nicely.
In my studio, on my beautiful new table which tilts, waiting to be glued to a hand-made substrate prior to installation. Still needs to be grouted.
Working in my home studio.
Putting some finishing touches on "Vortex," in my studio.
Almost done!

This photo was taken in 2013 when I took these two pieces to Burning Man to share. I was going to hang them at the Artery, the location where all the artists check in, but decided that it was just too risky, both weather-wise, and in terms of security. So my husband and I took them down from where they were hung here (getting lots of light!) and we hung them in our box truck, and invited folks in to see them. It was a real learning experience, but turned out well.
This was my contribution to a public art project that requested mosaic artists to make mosaics that reflect the culture of Afghani women, in order to draw attention to their struggle for freedom and basic rights. It was a worldwide project, and it is still in the process of coming together. This is just my contribution, and once I get a photo of the completed project, I will post it. It will be a depiction, in mosaic, of a very long scarf.
